McCain Institute: R.E.A.L Friends Don’t Campaign

Collaborative Mural with the Boys and Girls Club for the R.E.A.L Friends Don’t Campaign

Two artworks with a message of support and safety for young people were unveiled at the Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center in downtown Mesa.

The pieces, a mixed-media collage and a digital mural in the MIX Center’s lobby, were part of a campaign by the McCain Institute at Arizona State University to prevent online exploitation of children and teens.

Both works were created through a collaboration of local artists and youth organizations in Mesa to incorporate the messaging of the R.E.A.L. Friends Don’t campaign by the Combatting Human Trafficking program in the McCain Institute.

The digital mural, titled “Restoring Our Energy,” (seen above) was created by two artists from the Xico Inc. art collective, Diana Calderon and Martin Moreno, working with young people from the one•n•ten center for LGBTQ youth.

The mixed-media canvas, called “I AM Online Safety Awesome,” was done by artist Tiesha Harrison in collaboration with young people from the Boys & Girls Club in Mesa.

I am here to support The Rotary Club of Scottsdale.
And I have a story for you.......

All artists know that light is a very important element in composing and bringing to life a piece of art. That certainly is the case with our wonderful artist Tiesha Harrison, and her horse Sunflower Soul. In her case she not only used light and color to showcase the beauty of her horse, but the horse itself has been tasked with bringing that light outward to shine on everyone who sees him.

She describes herself as an intuitive artist who loves to bring together symbols and colors that are deeply meaningful.  She should know because all the colors and symbols on Sunflower Soul have served her as well. You see Tiesha’s sister was killed in a domestic violence incident recently which has affected her greatly. Bringing Sunflower Soul to life has helped her through the grieving process.

"Recycled Beauty" was inspired by art collaboration between Visual Abstract Artist Tiesha Harrison and two student artists from Hamilton High School who expressed their love for Arizona desert plants, florals, sunrises and maintaining a clean thriving community. A shared commonality based on the authentic love for nature, vibrant explosion of colors, healthy and clean environment which can be found throughout the City of Chandler. Whether you are commuting through the popular intersections of Chandler or taking a stroll in the friendly neighborhoods, there are so many things to be grateful for and look forward to when living in a diverse vibrant community.

The design is a great reminder for sustaining and/or implementing a few easy environmental awareness adjustments into our daily practice which can snowball into a greater impact for neighborhoods and generations to come."
